That night, after work, Henry came over with a pepperoni pizza to watch some television. I welcomed him with a hug, barely letting him get to the kitchen to set the pizza down first. “It was a long, slow day,” I confessed. “I’m really looking forward to relaxing with you.”

Once the pizza box was set on the table, he wrapped his arms around me and kissed my cheek. “I’m sorry about the bakery. I’m sure business will pick up soon.”

“I don’t know,” I said. “If only there was some way to prove it wasn’t an accident.”

Henry lifted his brow. “You make it sound like you’d be happy to find out it was a murder.”

I placed my hand on his chest and shook my head. “No, of course not. That’s not what I meant. It would be better for the bakery, but obviously that would be worse. I meant that it would be super-duper helpful if we could prove the bakery wasn’t at fault.”

“Oh, I see,” Henry said. “So, you mean you hope he accidentally died from something else?”

“Yes,” I said, pleased he was giving me this way out. “Precisely. I mean, I know that pastry didn’t kill him. So, what did? And speaking of the day Ian died, that woman came into the bakery today. The brunette I told you about. Apparently, she has a little girl and she was dating Ian, but they broke up the day of the murder.”

“You mean the day of the accident?”

“Yes, yes. Of course. The accident. Anyway, she said they broke up that day and I noticed she carried around a bag of mixed nuts in her purse. Certainly, that could mean something?”

Henry wrapped his arms tighter around me. “I think you’re reaching. I think you’re desperate for the bakery to return to normal and you’re looking for someone to blame. I did find out who the woman was based on your earlier description, though. Maria Sanchez. Her daughter’s name is Nina.”

“Wow,” I said, studying his face. “Good detective work. She did say her name was Maria, but I have no idea who the father of her kid is.”

“Interestingly enough, she is receiving child support from a man in Los Angeles, but his name isn’t Ian Hollister.”

“Really? Wow, she must really have a thing for California guys.”

“I guess so. Maybe they were friends or something.”

“She really wanted Ian to take her to Los Angeles, so maybe she’s just trying to date her way in,” I said with a laugh. Henry chuckled too.

“Well, regardless, I don’t think we have a case for murder. Not yet, anyway.” Henry tapped the top of my head and added, “It’s time to put your thinking cap away for tonight and fill that belly with delicious pizza.”

“Sounds good.” I wiggled out of his arms to open the pizza box and get a whiff of it. That’s when I noticed the sauce missing. “Oh no! They forgot the aioli!”

Dori, who’d been curled up on the sofa, lifted his head and yawned. “Just make some with magic.
